macular degeneration

İngilizce - Türkçe

MACULAR DEGENERATİON
Macular degeneration, also known as age-related macular degeneration (AMD), is a progressive eye disease that affects the macula, the central part of the retina responsible for sharp, detailed vision. It is a common cause of vision loss among older adults, with the risk increasing with age.
There are two types of AMD: dry and wet. Dry AMD is the more common type and is characterized by the presence of yellow deposits called drusen in the macula, which can cause a gradual loss of central vision over time. Wet AMD, on the other hand, is characterized by the growth of abnormal blood vessels beneath the macula, which can cause sudden and severe vision loss if they leak or rupture. While there is currently no cure for AMD, early detection and treatment can help slow the progression of the disease and preserve vision. Treatment options may include medications, laser therapy, or surgery, depending on the type and severity of the AMD. Regular eye exams, particularly for individuals over the age of 50 or those with a family history of AMD, are essential for early detection and treatment.
